What does it mean to lead projects when the outcomes are no longer predictable, but probabilistic?

As organizations rush to adopt Artificial Intelligence, many are making a critical mistake: treating AI initiatives like standard IT rollouts. But AI projects are fundamentally different. They are highly iterative, their scope often shifts dramatically between proof-of-concept and final production, and they thrive on uncertainty. Managing them with traditional, rigid structures is one of the most costly errors an organization can make.

Because today, there is a massive difference between using AI tools as a project manager, and successfully leading an actual AI project from start to finish.

This session dives into the reality of directing AI initiatives in unpredictable environments. Two industry experts will examine real-world case studies to map out how the project manager’s role must evolve—from initially validating if an AI use case is even feasible, to managing data lifecycles, coordinating technical teams without needing to be a data scientist, and driving real user adoption.

Crucially, this is all framed within a non-negotiable reality: AI governance. Implementing these tools without clear oversight, traceability, ethics, and accountability isn’t agility. It is a massive liability.

Why Join

Because managing AI requires common sense, strict logic, and tight risk management—not just algorithms. It still requires:

  • Evaluating the true feasibility of an AI use case before spending budget
  • The ability to lead highly technical teams without being a technical expert yourself
  • The responsibility to establish governance frameworks that protect your organization from bias and risk

This session is designed for professionals who want to move past the AI hype and understand the practical, human-centered lifecycle of leading these complex initiatives successfully.

What You Will Gain

By joining this session, you will:

  • Understand the AI project lifecycle: Learn how AI initiatives differ from traditional IT projects and how to adapt your management style.
  • Master cross-functional coordination: Gain strategies to bridge the gap between business requirements, data science teams, and end-users.
  • Navigate risk and governance: Explore practical frameworks for oversight, traceability, and ethical considerations to prevent algorithmic bias.
  • Drive meaningful adoption: Learn how continuous monitoring and human-centered change management ensure long-term project success.

About the PMI Belgium Webinar Program

This session is part of the PMI Belgium Chapter – Professional Development Webinar Program. Our webinars are designed not only to share knowledge, but to reflect the reality of project work, bringing forward topics that go beyond frameworks and support professionals in navigating complexity, uncertainty, and change.

At the same time, we align with PMI’s evolving perspective, supporting development across the PMI Talent Triangle and emphasizing value delivery, outcomes, and impact. Our intention is not to replace frameworks, but to expand how they are applied in practice.

Speakers

Patricia Domínguez Marín (Ph.D. in Mathematics, PMP) has over 20 years of experience leading global SAP migration and conversion projects. She describes herself as a translator of business requirements into effective IT solutions and as a natural problem-solver, capable of asking the right questions, developing rigorous models, and addressing uncertainty with logic and creativity. In addition to her technical and consulting work, she is actively involved in exploring the field of artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on responsible AI, AI literacy, AI governance, and the impact of algorithmic bias on diversity and decision-making processes. She regularly analyzes the implications of AI adoption in organizations, focusing on the ethical, inclusive, and responsible use of these technologies, as well as on governance frameworks that ensure accountability, transparency, and regulatory compliance. Patricia is also deeply committed to volunteering and promoting the presence of women in the fields of technology and project management. She is the founder of “FemPowerXChange,” an initiative dedicated to empowering professional women worldwide, and collaborates with the “Women in PM” initiative as a global volunteer for PMI. Additionally, she mentors young girls to spark their interest in STEM fields.

Maite Malavia, MM is a telecommunications engineer who has always been far more interested in people than in transistors, which is why she focused her professional career on training for many years. In 2018, she decided to completely change the direction of her career and return to the information technology sector. Since then, she has developed a multidisciplinary profile, working as an agile coach, Atlassian consultant, solutions architect, and technical product owner across various sectors. With a passion for artificial intelligence that dates back to her college years, she now defines herself as an “AI Common Sense Practitioner”: a way of saying that she applies AI in practice with common sense, ethical judgment, and a people-centered approach. She actively participates in technical AI projects with a responsible, human-centered approach and guides organizations on their journey toward AI adoption in her role as an “AI Safari Guide,” offering AI literacy, AI adoption, and change management services. Committed to advancing women in the tech world, she is the driving force behind “AI for Women,” a free AI training program aimed at women without technical training. Her goal: to bring artificial intelligence into the daily lives of women who have traditionally been excluded from technological tools, convinced that the democratization of AI begins with those who stand to benefit most from it. Curious by nature, passionate about Lean philosophy, and a staunch advocate of William James’s quote: „A sense of humor is just common sense dancing.“
