Disrupt conventional silo thinking by managing projects using Kanban’s value-based systems perspective

Description:
Kanban is much more than an agile method. It's a different way of looking at projects as part of a value chain that reaches beyond the single project. This session will demonstrate how Kanban's systems approach, value-based focus, and simple practices keep project managers in control. We will share a case story showing how Kanban facilitated higher project efficiency, smarter resource allocation, and proactive handling of cross-team dependencies, which are some of the biggest killers of project efficiency.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: (1) discuss how the Kanban core practices can help improve project efficiency, and identify which practices to apply to projects;(2) describe how to use relevant case-study examples and adapt them to improve performance or minimize the effect of cross-team dependencies.¨

Annette Vendelbo

Project Director, Agile Expert

Annette Vendelbo has 30 years' experience with IT project management and line management in Digital, HP, and other large global companies. In 2008 she founded Xvoto, an agile consultancy helping organizations with planning and executing agile transformations with respect for their particular culture, context, and agile readiness. In other words, she helps them plan for agile success. She also helps her clients with scaling agile to the program level and is an extremely experienced Kanban and Scrum coach and trainer. She has been involved in PMI's agile initiatives since 2014, most recently as a reviewer of the "PMI Agile Practice Guide."Her theoretical foundation and knowledge of Scrum and Kanban is widely acknowledged, but she firmly believes that theory cannot stand alone. Real value is created only when you succeed in relating the theory to the practical reality of the organizations that want to transform and make it operational and actionable. What makes her different and continuously relevant is the combination of her strong theoretical knowledge about agile methods combined with practical experience from real transformation projects. While she is a convinced agilist, she still applies good project management practice when appropriate. She has never forgotten her roots. When she is not busy with client work, she is blogging, writing articles, or giving public speeches and interviews—always about agile systems and how to make them work in real life. Her mantra is: "Reality always wins!"
