Project “GROW” Mentoring Program

Although people mainly learn and develop themselves through job experience, mentoring is a complementary way to learn through others, besides learning through structured courses and programs.

"Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be." Eric Parsloe, the Oxford School of Coaching & Mentoring

The mentoring programme will assist both mentors and mentees in attaining key life skills through sharing experiences with each other.
What are Mentors and Mentees?

A Mentor is defined as a person who is committed and able to share knowledge and experience in a manner that may lead to enhanced performance by positively affecting the professional and/or personal growth of a mentee.

A Mentee is defined as a committed person who seeks direction from a Mentor or benefits from his/her experience and lessons learned. Protégés must be active.

Mentors will become more self-aware and will benefit from the sense of satisfaction gained through giving back to the community.

Mentees gain from access to an impartial mentor able to help them develop new competencies including leadership skills, and many develop to the extent where they take on a mentoring role after completing the programme.

Mentors are expected to:

  • Offer challenging ideas
  • Act as a sounding board
  • Coach and teach by example
  • Share networking strategies
  • Help build self-confidence
  • Offer encouragement and wise counsel

Mentors are expected to:

  • Be open to new ideas and approaches
  • Assess your abilities objectively
  • Take action to modify behaviors and develop skills
  • Set and work towards goals
  • Take initiative in managing the relationship
  • Take responsibility for your own development

Mentors AND Mentees are expected to:

  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Recognize and value individual differences
  • Listen and ask questions
  • Provide honest, constructive feedback and be receptive to receiving feedback

Similar mentoring programs exist already in several other PMI Chapters such as Australia, UK or US.
