Each two weeks, a PMI volunteer gives a webinar to the PMP Study Group (Finland, Poland, Belgium, .....) which has about 120 members. This is a short interview with Rouzbeh Kotobzadeh who was the PMP coach at the last PMP Study Group webinar.
1) How did you get involved with the PMP Study Group?
I think it was 3 years ago when I submitted an application in PMI VRMS system to serve as a lecturer and facilitator in Finland PMP study group. Javier Martin was the coordinator on behalf of Finland PMI Chapter. After that I was so busy with my courses till this year when I got another opportunity to serve as a lecturer for the PMP study group. I had a phone interview with Krzysztof Moskwa who is responsible for PMI Poland Chapter after the application submission.
I really liked the idea of PMP study group and it was my pleasure to help them.
2) Which PMBOK knowledge area did you present?
Each webinar has a new PMBOK topic and mine was about Project Scope Management. So I covered all the processes of this knowledge area along with related tools & techniques. I have also tried to cover some tips they may face in the exam Along with some real examples.
3) How did it go?
It is a 2 hours webinar. So you don’t have much time to go deep in the Project scope management. (Actually, it took me a day to cover all the Project scope management in my classes). I started with the processes and then talked about the logic of inputs and outputs along with the usage of tools and techniques...
During the course I asked the participants some question to make the course interactive. I also gave some cases and examples of real failure which happened because of inappropriate Project scope management. The participants gave me feedback that the examples gave them a better understanding of the concept.
At the end we had a question and answer part and I put some exam questions for them to answer to have sense of the real exam.
4) How was the webinar facilitated ?
As it is a webinar and sometimes it felt a bit weird as you don’t see anybody while talking and it seems you are talking with yourself :). But it was great and well-coordinated. I also got a 5 out 5 feedback which is good to get as I would like to do this again next year.
5) Why would you advise other people to give a webinar?
I think it would be an excellent contribution in Project Management to help other people to grow their project management knowledge. You know this contribution will finally come back to us even as a person or entity who host the event or the lecturer. The world with more professionals is actually a better world to live and work.
And I have a suggestion for the chapters who host the meeting. You know preparation for the PMP exam is not simple and it is very hard to cover all the knowledge area concept in 2 hours. I suggest to improve some aspect of the PMP study group after some years of experiencing it.
You may assign some mentors for each group and I think it would be better to increase the duration of the sessions.
