International Women’s Day & Beyond: Growing the Women in Project Management Community

Articles

On International Women’s Day, March 8th, 15 inspiring women gathered in Antwerp for a day of connection and growth. We explored the principles of Ayurveda and learned how to communicate with authenticity and strength. The day ended joyfully with a laughter session in the park—hearts light, spirits lifted.

Each of the 15 women shared a single word to describe their experience:

I knew that other European Chapters were also celebrating Women’s Day with their own activities. But what sets our Women in Project Management Community apart is the vision I hold: not just a single event, but a continuous wave of connection and empowerment. A space where women of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels can uplift one another.

At the Global Summit Series (GSS) in Barcelona, I attended a powerful session focused on Women in Project Management, where speakers like Laura and Yasmina Khelifi shared their journeys and the challenges they faced as leaders. The message was clear: it all starts with the right mindset—own it. No one else will do it for you. And by owning our path, we naturally become role models, inspiring the next generation of women leaders.

One quote that truly stuck with me was: “Go from Bee Queen Syndrome to Sisterhood.” When I shared this in our WhatsApp group, Jennifer Sabine joked, “That’s a great title for your book, Anja.” I laughed—then paused. That right there is empowerment too. A spark of encouragement, a gentle nudge toward believing in what’s possible.

Truthfully, I had another book idea in mind: “The Yellow Car Strategy – An Easy Way to Happiness.” For those who know me, you’ve probably heard of it. When I feel overwhelmed or stressed, I look for yellow cars. Why yellow cars? No deep reason—just a moment of brightness, a reason to smile. Sometimes, joy is the most empowering strategy of all.

Jennifer wasn’t just making a joke—she was genuinely encouraging other women to engage with our community. Her passion was contagious. That same energy led Anna from the Austria Chapter to join our WhatsApp group.

Ayse was also at the GSS in Barcelona. We caught up on all kinds of topics. One moment I’ll never forget: sitting together in the garden of the conference venue, I guided her through a short meditation. Suddenly, a soft mist from a nearby fountain sprinkled over us. We laughed like children, grateful for that unexpected gift—tiny droplets that felt like blessings.

Back home, our weekly LadiesTalk sessions—Wednesdays at lunchtime—have become a cherished ritual. A space for connection, reflection, and support. One week, I couldn’t host the call while traveling. I felt a wave of guilt, worrying I had let the others down. But the following week, I was met only with kindness. Some had used the time to enjoy a sunny walk. No one was upset—and that’s exactly what this community is about. Not perfection or pressure, but presence, compassion, and joy.

During our most recent LadiesTalk, I expressed my deep gratitude to everyone. We closed the session with a beautiful gesture—the Namasté greeting, bowing to each other in mutual respect and recognition.

Renuka added depth to the moment by explaining what Namasté truly means. It’s more than a gesture—it’s a profound acknowledgment of the light within each of us. During the COVID period, when handshakes were discouraged, many adopted Namasté as a respectful, non-contact greeting. Even in the world of Laughter Yoga, Namasté holds a special place—we bow, we laugh, and we connect, not just through movement, but through shared presence and joy.
