The PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition and Agile Practice Guide

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK ® Guide)  is PMI's flagship publication and is a fundamental resource for effective project management in any industry.  It has been updated to reflect the latest good practices in project management.

(PMBOK ® Guide)  – Sixth Edition was released on 6 September 2017.

Over the past few years, more and more stakeholders have asked us for content on agile — and more are using agile practices, which is confirmed by our  Pulse of the Profession ®

research. That's why we included information on agile practices will be included alongside traditional approaches in the Sixth edition and partnered with Agile Alliance ® to create the new Agile Practice Guide.

The  PMBOK ®   Guide – Sixth Edition and  Agile Practice Guide were created to complement each other. Together these two publications are a powerful tool that enable the right approach for the right project.

What is the Scope of the update?

  • Alignment with ISO 21500
  • Agile: considerations for adaptive environment
  • Alignment with other PMI standards such as The Standards for Business Analyst
  • The Role of the Project Manager (PMI Talent Triangle)

What are the Knowledge Areas and Process Changes?

  • No new Knowledge Areas – 2 name changes (Schedule and Resources)
  • Processes: several process changes, new and removed processes.

What does this mean for the PMP® / CAPM® / ACP® Exams?

The Project Management Professional (PMP)®, Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® exams will be updated in Q1 and Q2 2018 to correspond to the release of the PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition and the Agile Practice Guide
