My Journey as a PMI Volunteer
It is almost the end of my mandate on the Board, and I would like to share my experience as a volunteer. Perhaps it will inspire some of you to take on a role yourselves. Volunteering is a rewarding experience.
I first discovered PMI Belgium in 2012 during an Open Chapter Event where non-members were invited to explore our community. Soon after, I was enrolled as team leader for the partner program of the BeNeLux Day, which took place in Transinne, with the partner program held at the Grottes de Han.
From there, I stayed engaged with annual events such as BeNeLux Day and later PMFair. I also organized other initiatives like New Year Events and Chapter Events. What I enjoyed most was the cohesion created within the volunteer group. It was rewarding and fun.
After a few years, I felt ready to join the Board. I applied for the role of Project Manager of the PMFair and, in 2018, I became the Director of Events and PMFair for two years. It was an enriching experience working with volunteers. The work was heavy at times, but we did it with a smile, good team spirit, and mutual support.
During that time, I was also regularly in contact with sponsors. This encouraged me to apply for the role of Director of Sponsorship. It was not an easy task, especially during the period of COVID and economic recession.
For me, the next step was clear: to become President. I was honored to be the first woman to serve as President of the Belgium Chapter and to conclude my mandate in style with a PMFair celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Chapter in 2023.

Attention Points as a Volunteer
In our lives, we juggle jobs, families, and volunteer activities within PMI. The challenge lies in managing these constraints. Before committing, ask yourself four questions:
- Scope: What do I want to do as a volunteer?
- Time: How much of my time can I dedicate to this activity?
- Cost: How will this influence my job?
- Quality: What will be the impact on my family life?
What I Gained from this Experience
During these 13 years as a volunteer, I met many people from different sectors and countries, all sharing the same passion for project management. I was inspired by the many interactions with members, including international members, and I enjoyed sharing my experience with motivated volunteers who discovered how the Belgium Chapter functions. I also learned a great deal.
I had the opportunity to combine my two passions: project management and events. I made great friends, expanded my professional knowledge (I am a PMO), and developed my soft skills. I used to be very shy and had no experience speaking in public, but volunteering pushed me to overcome that. You cannot say no when you must speak in front of 250 people at a PMFair or during a Region 8 Meeting.
For me, team spirit was always important within the Board and within the PMFair team. When you pay attention to people’s well-being, you can create synergy and good vibes.
I would like to thank the past presidents who supported me during my mandate and shared their experience. I would also like to thank my fellow board members, the volunteers I met along the way, and, of course, all the members who trusted me, shared their ideas, gave feedback, and joined us at networking events.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Take care,
Christine Dassy
